Ancient temples, palaces and a tribute to Augusta

The vibrant day and nightlife of Bangkok is balanced with the serenity of golf and island escapes.

Few cities in the world inspire travellers’ tales quite like Bangkok. Whether they’re of the late-night variety from the infamous Khao San Road, legends from its ancient past etched within the walls of myriad palaces and temples or the never-ending folk tales laced with the making of its street food, not many rival Bangkok when it comes to conjuring up a good yarn.

For golf travellers, it’s a case of being at the start of a story, as the city has ambitions to create the ‘world’s golf capital’. There are dozens of plush mountain courses within a 30 minute drive of the city, not to mention many more located on the beautiful islands a short flight away.

The Golf

ROYAL GEMS

There’s 63 holes of golf planned for this 560-acre site in the north of Bangkok, including three full 18 holes, each of distinct style. The first open ten years ago, with Ron Garl opting to choose holes from the likes of TPC Sawgrass and half of Augusta as inspiration.

ALPINE GOLF CLUB

Also created by American Garl, despite being built on flat rice paddy fields, it’s a man-made hilly Championship course, and hosted the Johnnie Walker Classic on the European Tour twice, in 2004 when Spain’s Miguel Ángel Jiménez took the honoours, and four years earlier when Tiger Woods defeated Australian Geoff Ogilvy.

THAI COUNTRY CLUB

An immaculate course with plenty of variety, Thai Country Club opened in 1996 and a year later the 7,097-yard course was put to the test by none other than Tiger Woods, who won the Asian Honda Classic here.

The Hotels

ROSEWOOD BANGKOK *****

One of the most striking buildings in the heart of Bangkok, this only opened in 2019 with deluxe rooms having spectacular views of the city, and a traditional Thai aesthetic blending with the modernity of Rosewood. The same applies to the spa offering local healing treatments, and there’s also a large saltwater pool facing the Bangkok skyline, and plentiful dining options too.
